What Is an EPP or Authorization Code?

Learn why domain transfers can require an EPP/Auth code and how to handle it securely.

An EPP code, also called an authorization or transfer code, is a credential used in the transfer of many domain names between registrars.

The code is normally obtained from the registrar currently managing the domain.

Because the authorization code can be used as part of a domain-transfer process, treat it as sensitive information. Do not publish it or send it in public messages.

When you submit an eligible transfer request through Kimnet, the code is stored using protected application storage and is used only for the transfer workflow.

The current registrar may also require the domain to be unlocked before transfer.

An incorrect or expired authorization code can prevent a transfer from proceeding. If the transfer cannot be processed, obtain a current code from the existing registrar.

After a transfer is completed or definitively failed, the transfer workflow does not need to retain the authorization code indefinitely.

If you are unsure where to obtain the code, contact the registrar where the domain is currently registered.
